Canada: Pinning Hopes on the West

Canadian chemical producers say they are bracing for a sharp drop in profitability this year amid fluctuating energy prices, a slow economy, and a rapid increase in the Canadian-U.S. dollar exchange rate. That drop, which some analysts expect to be as much as 30%, follows a record 2007. Chemical demand is also expected to continue to slide, especially if the Canadian dollar remains so strong, industry executives say....
